Vintage 1930's - 40's? Semi-Vitreous Round, lidded Soup Tureen or Vegetable Serverby Edwin M. Knowles China Co. Made in USA
In the gorgeous Lorraine pattern #48 8 featuring delicate pink flowers (roses?) and leaves encircling the bowl and lid. Pretty gold leaf around the outside of the bowl, lid, and on the handles.
I have tried to find out when this pattern was produced, but my research findings have been all over the place, from the 1930's to early1960's (I think somewhere in between is likely the most accurate. Edwin M. Knowles himself, died in the 40's, but the company went on. I thought maybe the marking on the bottom #48 8 meant August 1948, but other when looking at other pieces whose sellers have dated them, have little to do with the mark as being the actual date. At least, I don't think so. Still, a really lovely piece and most definitely vintage, no matter the actual date.
The term, semi-vitreous, (also known as SV) as I learned, has to do with the amount of water porcelain can hold. When bone china and porcelain
are fused together at high temperatures, they become vitreous, and absorb less than 3% water. Semi-vitreous absorbs 3 - 7% in the mfg process.
Some crazing commensurate with age.
3" deep without lid
6" deep with lid and including base

8" x 10" outside width (the 10" includes the handles on the one side.
Will be wrapped and padded securely to make it to the lucky buyer.
