Edwin W Knowles Tia Juana Serving Bowl + Saucer Vintage Sleeping Mexican 1940
The colorful pattern features a typical Mexican kitchen scene. There is a person sitting on a clay tile floor in an open doorway, facing outside, wearing a Mexican sombrero (hat) and serape (scarf). Looking into the courtyard you can see some cactus. On the wall and shelves of the kitchen are colorful pottery pots and jugs. In the top right corner of the pieces is a small grouping of colorful fruit / peppers. The china pieces are edged in red. They have a nice weight to them. There are some irregularities in the glaze, there could be some rough edges, and some colors might show some wear. On some pieces, the red edging might be worn in places. If there are other imperfections or flaws, it will be noted below. Otherwise, there are no chips, cracks, repairs, crazing, or flea bites.
The colors on
the Large Serving Bowl are slightly different than other pieces. There is less red and more subtle earth tones.
It measures 3 inches in height x 9 inches in diameter measured at the top. Also stamped on the bottom: Union Made Tia Juana.
The saucer measures 6 inches in diameter measured at the top. The surface shows a crack under the glaze. It is only noticeable if you are looking for it and you can’t feel it – it was glazed over.
This lot weighs 1-1/2 pounds unpackaged.
Other pieces in this pattern that we sold were marked “Semi Vitreous. Edwin W. Knowles China Co. Made in U.S.A. 40-6”. Made in June 1940. The large serving bowl marking is listed above. The saucer is not marked.
