Beautiful Rare Scalloped Sugar Bowl. Attributed to Renowned Silversmith Apolonio Guevara. Circa early 1900's. Mexico.
Apolonio Guevara, a master Mexican silversmith, was a well known among the Mexican Elite in the early 1900's as one of Mexico's most skilled Silver Craftsmen. Guevera Created many exquisite hand made pieces for several of Mexico's "Rich and Famous" of the era, most notably including Mexican President Porfirio Diaz. His works have been displayed in Mexican Museums, Private Collections, and the Mexican Presidential Palace for nearly a century. Guevara was teacher to another Renowned Mexican Silversmith- Pedro Molina, who served a 4 year apprenticeship under Guevara while a student at the Mexican Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City, where he fine tuned his craft under the tutelage of Guevara to become on of Mexico's most well known TAXCO Master Silversmiths.
In a rather odd twist, Guevara was accused of "Forgery"  late in his career, affixing "Forged Punches" to his High Quality Handmade Silver Pieces, purportedly in an effort to have them dated as Spanish Pre-Colonial pieces. The documentation of his "forged punches" appeared in the book, "The Art of the Silversmith in Mexico, 1519-1936" written by Lawrence Anderson in 1941. During a visit to Guevara's shop, Anderson photographed the punches in use, cataloged them, and printed them within his book.
This bowl displays several of the hallmarks noted in the book. The LIN/CR , The Balls and Columns, and the Eagle are all displayed on the lid of the bowl. Additionally, the assay marks are present as well. With the information and research provided we believe this is one of the RARE, handmade, high quality silver "forgeries" made by Antonio Guevara during this period. We have tested the piece as silver, and it is in good condition for it's age with only slight imperfections, some wear on the punches, and one small crack on the rim of the lid (see photos). It has not been polished, and shows patina consistent with age.  While we do not believe it is of the Spanish Colonial Era, we DO believe it is nearly 100 years old and made in the style of 1780's silver. It is an exquisite piece of Silver with plenty of history, and a heck of a story, attributed to one of Mexico's premier Silversmiths of the early 1900's.  Total Weight 43.6 Oz!
