In 1945, after the Allied forces defeated Hitler’s Germany, all the existing currency (notes and coins) were replaced with Allied issued currency. All the Nazi currency which was in circulation and in the German banks was destroyed. All that remained was the currency kept by citizens at home, and the coins and notes in private collections. Because of the large scale destruction of Nazi currency, the number of coins existing today is just a small fraction of the original mintage.
